Flip through any marine publication and a familiar pattern emerges. Beautiful boats. Open water. Sunset light. Lifestyle photography that captures the essence of boating, but often blends together across pages and brands.
As one of the most established events in the maritime industry, Annapolis Boat Shows didn’t need more visibility. It needed distinction.
Symmetry worked with the Annapolis Boat Shows team to rethink the visual direction of its advertising campaign and develop a more ownable creative system. Instead of relying exclusively on traditional photography, the campaign introduced a more illustrative and graphic-forward approach. Custom illustration, bold compositions, and a refined visual language were used to create a system that immediately stands apart in crowded marine media environments.
The goal was simple: make the Annapolis Boat Shows instantly recognizable before the logo ever appears.
In a publication landscape dominated by similar boating imagery and lifestyle photography, differentiation becomes the defining challenge. The illustrative system introduces a consistent, ownable visual language that cuts through that repetition, creating immediate contrast on the page and strengthening recall where most ads compete using the same visual approach.
More than a stylistic shift, the work establishes a more distinctive presence for the brand. One that reflects the energy, movement, and experience of the shows while breaking decisively from category convention. The result became a modern, highly identifiable advertising look that gives Annapolis Boat Shows a stronger presence across the marine publishing landscape.
